Instructional Design
Instructional design is the systematic process of creating training and educational content for a specific learning purpose. Based on the science of instruction, the process involves several levels of analysis to:
The design phase requires the instructional design team (designers, programmers, artists, managers, customer liaison) to create:
The development phase of the process involves:
Implementation of the course follow various processes based on industry or organization, but involves:
Evaluation of the course is a summative evaluation using quantitative methods (e.g., pretest-instruction-posttest or other method to demonstrate learning took place due to the course instruction).
- Define the target audience
- Develop and state the learning objectives
- Determine the appropriate learning strategies
- Identify necessary instructional materials
- Select an appropriate delivery method
The design phase requires the instructional design team (designers, programmers, artists, managers, customer liaison) to create:
- Static prototypes appropriate to the delivery method (e.g., graphical user interface, storyboard templates, presentation slide templates, job aid templates)
- Define media elements to be used (still images, animations, video, white board animations) and technical specifications for their use in the course
- Obtain customer approval of the design
- Develop and test a functional prototype and finalize the technical specifications to ensure the course will be accessible to instructors and students in the delivery environment
The development phase of the process involves:
- Development of assessments
- Development of storyboards, instructional content, media and graphics, job aids, and practice activities
- Editorial and QA review of all instructional components
- Customer review or subject matter expert (SME) review for technical accuracy of the instructional content
- Reliability and validity of assessment items
- Formative evaluation of the instruction (e.g, field trials)
Implementation of the course follow various processes based on industry or organization, but involves:
- Final functional tests of the course materials in the customer's learning management system or in the classroom
- Final delivery of all materials to the customer
- Release of the course to the target population
Evaluation of the course is a summative evaluation using quantitative methods (e.g., pretest-instruction-posttest or other method to demonstrate learning took place due to the course instruction).
